The story maps to all six ACT processes

ACT process 1

Acceptance

Sam stops struggling against the pain he cannot control and learns to make room for it — modeling the willingness ACT asks of clients.

ACT process 2

Cognitive Defusion

As Sam steps back from the harsh stories he tells himself, the reader sees thoughts as passing words rather than literal truths.

ACT process 3

Present Moment

Quiet, sensory moments pull Sam — and the reader — out of rumination and into what is actually happening right now.

ACT process 4

Self-as-Context

Sam discovers he is the one who notices his struggle, not the struggle itself, illustrating the observing self at the heart of ACT.

ACT process 5

Values

Encounters along the way help Sam clarify what truly matters to him, surfacing the values that give his burden meaning.

ACT process 6

Committed Action

Sam chooses connection over judgment and takes concrete steps toward the life he wants, even while still carrying his weight.

How counselors use it

Between-session reading

Assign as homework to reinforce acceptance and values work without clinical language.

Group therapy

Shared reading opens dialogue around isolation, shame, and connection in a low-stakes way.

Grief & trauma work

The themes of witnessed versus unwitnessed pain resonate strongly in trauma-informed care.

A parable about the weight we all carry

The Weight of Grace follows Sam, who is carrying a burden no one else can see. Through a series of encounters, he learns that the pain we hide is part of a shared human experience — and that healing begins the moment our struggle is witnessed rather than judged. Written as an allegory, the story delivers the core moves of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in language any client can absorb in a single sitting.
